Is this Japanese knotweed??"We are not certain that it is Japanese Knotweed, but there is a strange triffid-like plant growing in the ditch along The Ridge, near the field gates to Westrop Farm, which looks very like it from the pictures we have found on the internet. If it IS Japanese Knotweed, then it seems that it is the most invasive plant ever seen in the wild in the UK and is VERY VERY difficult to get rid of (google it and see for yourselves). There are even various laws about it and its control... It can grow to 3-4m high and stifle all around it. It seems to be resistant to most, if not all herbicides. I am about to 'phone West Berks to see if it is 'notifiable' and will post my findings shortly. In the meantime if anyone can ascertain what it is, and eliminate JK then we can relax. However a word of warning: it can reproduce from any part of the plant NO MATTER HOW SMALL! So don't pick a piece (unless you burn it afterwards); don't flail it, chop it or otherwise encourage it's propagation. Watch this space. If you wish you can phone us on 862500. Ann and Robert Olive" Summer Abseil for British Red Cross in Berkshire"We have our 4th annual midsummer abseil on Friday

Is anyone interested in following a Cold Ash Twitter account? If you have no idea what I mean then that's fine. I thought it could be used when the website is updated, or as reminders for road closures, accidents (trees down etc). Let me know here If you follow ColdAshVillage and send updates top your mobile phone, you can get these updates instantly. I have tweeted about bin collections, lost glasses, and general updates to the website. I could send out Neighbourhood watch information (did you know there had been burglaries on The Ridge?).
